Yes — fully charge the S1 before first use. Plug the charger into your power source, then plug its output lead into the socket on the back of the toilet, and leave the S1 switched on while it charges so the battery gauge can learn its capacity. It's fully charged when the light on the charger turns green.

This is normal. The gauge is still learning your battery's real capacity, so it may show full before it actually is, or show partly full when it's actually full. After a few complete charge cycles the reading settles and becomes accurate. Until then, go by the charger light, not the gauge.

Use a genuine CompoCloset charger only. The DC-DC charger (included in the box) accepts 10–24V input and is for vehicles, boats, and off-grid 12V/24V systems. The wall charger (sold separately) is for 110–240V household outlets. Never connect the socket on the back of the toilet directly to a vehicle supply, alternator, or LiFePO4 battery — it only accepts the output of a CompoCloset charger, max 12.6V.

Compostable liners are black, made from industrially compostable material. High-barrier liners are white, with extra durability and odour protection. Whichever you choose, use the S1 app to tell the toilet which material it's sealing.

No — it has a wide, stable base and most people use it freestanding. If you'd prefer it not to move, there are four eyelets in the base for screwing it to the floor. If you don't fix it down, just make sure it's stowed so it can't slide or tip while travelling.

The app is required to tell the S1 which liner material you're using, and it's how you install firmware updates. It's also used to pair with the toilet during setup.

Sit down to use it (this prevents backsplash) and keep the covering plates closed when only urinating. The urine level indicator LED turns on when the bottle needs emptying. To empty it, lift the seat, remove the bottle, unscrew the cap, and pour slowly to avoid splashback.

Yes — fold it up and drop it into the liner and it'll be sealed on the next flush.

Empty the solids bin frequently — ideally after one or two uses — to make sure there's room for the liner to feed down. If the bag isn't feeding down properly, there's likely something in the bin blocking it.

No — the previous sealing cycle must fully complete before the toilet is used again. The toilet is ready again once all the LEDs go off (a full cycle can take up to 5 minutes depending on liner material and temperature).

Yes — nappies, feminine hygiene products, and similar sanitary waste are fine. Never seal sharp or pointed items, hot/burning/smouldering materials, or chemicals/reactive substances.

At room temperature, generally a few hours up to 3 days depending on conditions, contents, and liner material. In hotter conditions, try to dispose of bags within 48 hours — sooner is always better.

Each liner is marked near the end of the roll. When you see the end-of-liner mark, feed and remove the remaining liner and install a fresh roll. If you're switching liner materials, update the setting in the app.

No — the sealing mechanism draws air through the solids bin via a fan, and a bag in the bin blocks that airflow and can damage the fan. The only exception is manual mode, where the sealing mechanism has been removed entirely (see the troubleshooting section below).

The S1 beeps and lights an LED to show an error code if it can't operate or detects a fault. Try the fix below — if the problem persists or keeps recurring, contact us and we'll help get you going again.

The S1 won't flush without enough charge — charge it to resume normal use. If you're off-grid with no way to charge but need the toilet, you can remove the sealing mechanism and place a bag directly in the solids bin to use it as a simple separating toilet. This is the only time a bag should go in the solids bin. Remove that bin bag before refitting the sealing mechanism.

Check the battery isn't flat — the unit runs off the battery, not the charger directly, so a very low battery can stop it powering on even while plugged in. Charge fully and try again. If it still won't power on, check the sealing mechanism's connector to the battery box.

Check nothing is obstructing the solids bin below the liner. When installing or replacing liner, make sure the fold lines sit concentric around the sealing mechanism opening — misalignment can cause feed issues.

Switch the toilet off first. Clean external surfaces only (lid, seat, outer body, base) with a soft, damp cloth and a mild, non-abrasive detergent — never bleach or harsh chemicals. Don't clean with running water, don't immerse it, and don't attempt to clean inside the sealing mechanism.

Recharge it at least every three months, within the 0–40°C charging range. Switch the S1 off at the battery box as well during storage — a charger left connected can attempt to charge the battery in freezing or very hot conditions and cause permanent damage.

Remove the bag liner and let the unit air-dry completely for 24 hours before using it again. Avoid exposing the S1 to direct water streams, always sit down while using it, and avoid very humid/wet environments.

Yes, both are user-replaceable. Switch the S1 off first. The 9V battery (urine sensor) is behind its own cover. The lithium battery pack is inside the battery box behind a removable cover — fit only a genuine CompoCloset lithium pack.
